Fake Botox still on the market

Some of you may remember an e mail alert we sent out in 2010 regarding the unauthorized use of Botox or "fake imported Botox" by certain unregulated spas. This problem still goes on today. Once again a news agency, this time the CBC, breaks the story of how spas are ordering counterfeit Botox over the internet from places like Mexico and Turkey. In addition, the staff injecting clients are not physicians.

According to Allergan, Inc., the only worldwide manufacturer of Botox, only a licensed, trained medical professional can administer the injections. Health Canada goes further in this report by saying "As described in the Botox product monograph, Botox should only be prescribed and administered by a physician. If Botox is used in any way other than that described in the product monograph, it would be considered to be a contravention of the Food and Drugs Act." The story further outlines some good tips to help minimize these safety issues. Always be suspect of deals and unscrupulous Internet advertising.

Botox tips

  • Do not buy into Botox deals or sales.
  • Do not purchase Botox online.
  • Stay away from do-it-yourself Botox kits.
  • Check with your province's regulating body to ensure your physician is licensed.
  • Ask to see the Botox bottle and ensure it has a hologram and serial number.
